Dane Gengleron Hobbywing Xerun XR8 Plus G2S 1/8 Competition Sensored Brushless ESC

I've had issues with the ESC since purchasing last year. The ESC cuts out for .3 to .5 seconds on just about anything but a buttery smooth landings. It was over $200 and has cost me multiple races. It's hard to just throw away $200. I've contacted Hobbywing directly. They provided little to no help. They stated it was a known issue and would be resolved with a firmware update to which has never resolved the issue. Hobbywing then sent a thicker foam to help absorb impacts but did not make a difference. In the 20+ years of racing, I have not dealt with a "known issue" without the manufacturer providing an actual repair or offering a replacement unit. All of my ESCs are Hobbywing in the 2 1/8th scale vehicles and 4 1/10th scales. This is the only model having issues. Tempted to obtain the Gen 3, but also worry about how poorly customer service was with such a prominent manufacturer.

Run this in all of my 1/8th scale e-buggy and e-truggy vehicles. This ESC is robust and high performing. Never had an issue, even in very hot, harsh environments (114 deg F SoCal race events). Definitely recommend combining this with a Hobbywing 1/8th scale G3 motor as one gets "full sensored" performance from stand still to full throttle. Having tested all sorts of ESC+motor combos from different vendors, the feel of the Hobbywing combo is noticeably better. My preference is the 1900kV 4268SD motor (HWA30401906) for both e-buggy and e-truggy (maybe for really big tracks you could consider the 2250kV 4274SD motor (HWA30405001), but I haven't felt I needed the extra power even on a track like the TheDirt at Perris). Also can recommend the Hobbywing OTA Smartphone ESC Module Programmer (HWA30850400). This is the best way to set up your Hobbywing ESC, imo. Super easy to use phone app. *Sportsman-level driver, been running 8th scale for 10 years.

I have 2 of these in my Teknos. EB48 2.1 and ET48 2.1 and they work flawless. Never have any problems.

What reviewers say

Reviews are mostly positive, with many owners praising the ESC's throttle response, durability and reliability in 1/8 buggy and truggy racing, and some noting good results when paired with Hobbywing motors and the OTA programmer. Several reviewers say it has run for years without problems. Disagreements exist: one reviewer reports repeated mid-run cutouts, unresolved after firmware and foam fixes, and says Hobbywing offered little support. Another reports a unit breaking after a short period, and a reviewer says the listing photos showed supercapacitors that were not included. A reviewer notes the original program box is incompatible and a Program Box Pro is needed. Several reviews are short and lack detail, and some mention a variant or accessories rather than performance.

  • + Smooth, linear throttle response
  • + Robust, durable build
  • + Reliable across years of racing
  • + Good performance with Hobbywing motor and OTA programmer
  • − Reported mid-run cutouts in one review
  • − Support concerns from one owner
  • − Listing photos showed supercapacitors not included
  • − Original program box incompatible
