Works great. Got this for Kyosho Sandmaster 2 as the included motor is underpowered in my opinion. After about 6 speed runs on 2s it did get a little warm but not too hot. Will be running it more today andy drop the pinion but I will be buying more because of the great price point
It's a good motor. Plenty of power on 2s and decent on heat, as long as the vehicle you put it in is geared right and there's good airflow. Extremely good price though, and it's got just enough power to make a vintage kit nice and quick without getting ridiculous.
Overall good quality and I like the bearings vs bushing of their competitors. I bought a few of these for my early vintage kits (scorpion, jay Halsey rc10, javelin) was quite disappointed with the power. I figured 17t would have some power. More than a 27t stocker or at least a silver can. I tried lots of different gear ratios. It was either slow or it got hot real quick. I broke out the old fantom motor dyno and tested it out. Almost identical output to the tamiya torque tuned silver can motor. Like identical. I think for future build I will just buy the reedy radon motors or possibly the traxxas 12t 550’s
Three verified or reviewed owners rate the Holmes Hobbies Retro Sport 540 Brushed Motor (17T) between 3 and 5 out of 5. Reviewers praise its low price and bearing construction, and two found it adequate for vintage kits on 2S. Heat is a recurring concern: one owner reported it running warm, and another said heat depends on gearing and airflow. The lowest-rated review reports disappointing power, with dyno results close to a Tamiya torque-tuned silver can motor, and that reviewer chose a different motor for future builds. The reviews are few, so the overall picture is limited.
- + Very low price
- + Bearings instead of bushings
- + Adequate power on 2S for vintage kits
- + Manageable heat when geared correctly
- − Runs hot with some gearing setups
- − Power disappointing to one owner
- − Dyno output similar to a silver can motor
