About this part

The ProTek R/C "SureStart 2" Rechargeable Glow Ignitor features a 5000mAh 1.2V sub-C NiMH battery to allow extended use with the safety and peace of mind that can only come from a NiMH battery. The SureStart 2 is a high quality glow ignitor that can be charged easily with most NiMH battery chargers. This ignitor is great for surface and aircraft applications, due to its compact size and 2.25" reach. Plus, there is a small "Property Of" space on the label can be used to prove ownership when your friends borrow it and forget to give it back. Use a sharpie to fill in your name, and cover it with clear vinyl or scotch tape to prevent the writing from getting worn off.

NOTE: For the best performance during a race day it is recommended that the ignitor be left on the charger when not in use.

This thing kicks butt. Had 2 of the Dynamite lipo drivers malfunction (one made it 9 months, the other only 1 day) and determined that lipo just isn't sorted out for the glow igniters quite yet. Good ol' NiMH works flawlessly for this, and doesn't require any fancy voltage regulating boards inside to fail or have questionable solder jobs on from the factory. I got 2 of these just so my starter box caddy is armed with backup in case my pit guy fumbles one into the beer cooler. Haven't had one not work so I don't know how long the batteries go on a charge till it's unable to fire up an engine. I just plug them up to an old Dynamite igniter wall charger for several hours before going to the track. Got an adapter to connect to a big charger that can do 2S-4S Lipos and such, but found out my charger must not be able to do 1 cell NiMH batteries. Not a big deal since unlike the 1300mah to 1800mah sizes you typically see, these ProTek igniters are a beefy 5000mah capacity. And ultimately, if your tune is somewhat in the ballpark and your engine still has ample pinch, you should only end up putting the igniter on for maybe like 5 seconds per start anyway, so maybe a grand total of something around 1 minute of glowing for a whole practice day of nitro. 5/5 would dine again.

Don’t bother with the pencil one. This is the beast you want. Holds the plug decent and more importantly, holds a charge. Will recommend.

Good luck starting your nitro engine without an igniter. This one works perfectly for such an application. Holds a charge for multiple weekends of engine starting duties.

What reviewers say

Reviews of the ProTek RC SureStart 2 Rechargeable Glow Igniter (1.2V/5000mAh) are sharply divided. Most positive reviewers report reliable starting, good charge retention lasting multiple race days or weekends, and long-term durability over about a year. Several 1-star and 2-star reviews describe the unit failing after a few uses or race days, with reports of overheating or smoking, a stuck ground disc, and an internal stem falling out. One reviewer also notes lipo-based igniters from another brand failed, favouring NiMH cells. The recurring concern is inconsistent reliability and possible unit-to-unit defects. Reviewers do not describe the cause of the failures in detail.

  • + Holds a charge for multiple race days or weekends
  • + Reliable engine starting in many reports
  • + Long-term durability for some owners
  • + NiMH cells praised over lipo alternatives
  • − Smoking or overheating reported after limited use
  • − Failures after few uses or race days
  • − Ground disc reported stuck in the battery
  • − Internal stem reported falling out
