well the skinny on the motor! first it is easy to tune in! break in is as expected with this motor as well as with any motor, once broken in, tune was very easy, and held its tune very well!! but!! a down side! not really good in a Truggy, however in a buggy!! its got good "Kick to It" and has some long legs!! you can run in truggy? but it lags a little in the power band, not bad? but a little Sluggish at times. in my Kyosho cars with a Hipex 2146 pipe and the Hipex 2034 pipes were really on par!! with the 2034 had more top end with same tune.(Basically a NovaRossi 9901 pipe!!!) the holy Grail of pipes back in the day! so this is more Buggy type, what i found unexpected? was the Price? in buggy sometimes less is more? and for its price range for a "Buggy" its hard to beat. best part, replacement parts for these engines are Priced where others "Should Be" others at, 120.00 140.00 180.00 and up for a Piston and sleeve is ridiculous! its a cash cow. where as these engines you will average about 70.00 to replace Pistons and sleeves. "Fair and Reasonable" if doing allot of club racing and the budget might be a little tighter than expected, this is a Great Option to look into! hope this can be of some help.
I love this engine has a lot of power, with a good pipe is very fast,im planing on buying another,i have the photon on my kyosho mp9 ,in the track nothing to envy to those expensive engines in my truggy mbx8tr i have the 8 port with hipex tuned pipe ,an is a beast, you cant beat that price for that performance, really dont understand the complaints for this engine, maybe they lack of tunning abilitys or pipe combination, mine runs very fast with those expensive engines, im gonna buy two more, any of those guys that are unhappy with your engines, send them to me?????
The engine was ok, but I would have spent a little bit more money on a nicer engine.
This motor is absolute garbage. I know it's broken in--no catch at TDC with plug out when warmed up. I've tried 3 pipes. It makes NO power, like it's just broken. There is no tuning it to do anything other than be an absolute dog that takes a year to wind up. Actually left an event because I couldn't even get over the jumps. Disassembled, looks fine, no indication as to what is wrong. Starting to think it came with mismatched internals or something. There's no instructions that actually tell you what the head shim options are, no resources online, and the engine isn't even listed on their site anymore. Best $170 paper weight I've ever bought. I've had OS, werks, reedy, nova, and ran nitro for over 20 years. Absolute worst motor experience I've ever had. IF there's anything that will make you spend the money for a speed motor, this one is it--so much time down the drain trying to get "meet all your needs" to do anything than run like a dog.
Four reviews of the SH Engines PT2021-P3XGB Photon Pro Off Road .21 Buggy Engine, rated 1 to 5. Reviewers generally find it easy to tune once broken in, and one praises its power in a buggy with a well-matched pipe. Opinions diverge sharply: one reviewer finds it sluggish in a truggy and feels it is less competitive than pricier engines, while another reports strong performance in a truggy with an 8-port pipe. A verified owner reports a severe lack of power, failure to hold a tune, and difficulty finding head shim information or support. One reviewer says a nicer engine would have been worth the extra cost. Reviews are few and contradictory, so the overall picture is uncertain.
