The Tamiya Lunch Box Evo takes a legendary RC icon and turns up the fun with improved suspension, better stability, and classic monster truck attitude. Keeping the original retro style while adding modern performance upgrades, it’s the perfect blend of nostalgia, wheelies, and all-out backyard bashing.

About the Lunch Box Evo

Iconic Platform

The Tamiya Lunch Box Evo keeps the instantly recognizable ABS van body that made the original famous, now updated with fresh graphics and a tougher mounting system. Its classic look delivers pure retro RC fun while staying true to the model that generations of builders love.

Improved Handling & Performance

Built on the updated CW-01E chassis, the Lunch Box Evo features a longer wheelbase, wider tread, and a lower body mount for improved stability. Front double wishbone suspension, a rear 3-link rigid axle, strut bar, and full ball bearings work together to provide better traction, smoother control, and more predictable handling.

Easy & Custom Ready Build

Designed for builders who love to personalize, this 2WD monster truck includes a 540-type motor and ESC to get you running fast. Updated steering geometry, hex wheel hubs, and a durable ABS box-type frame make it a reliable, upgrade-friendly platform that’s perfect for both nostalgic fans and new RC drivers.

Loads of fun to build. Super fun to drive! Having always wanting one of these as a kid, I recently built one with my son. The included bearings & oil filled shocks are a nice touch. Be sure to use some green slime when assembling the shocks as Tamiya shocks are notorious for leaking. The steering seems to be the weakest link in the kit. The kit included servo saver went straight into the trash can. We installed an inexpensive generic digital metal gear servo & found that the JConcepts aluminum servo horn for the 89' Masami was a perfect fit! This along with some 3mm turnbuckles made a big difference. Pick up a few extra Tamiya 5mm balljoints & check the manual for the proper turnbuckle lengths. In addition, unless you like doing wheelies all the time, we found the rear shock springs to be useless. Pick up the Hot Racing factory spec 54mm front spring set. They will work on the rear perfectly & come in 4 different weights. The red ones worked great. Lastly the kit does come with hex hub adapters, which are a nice touch allowing you to experiment with other wheel setups but you need (4) Tamiya 950 5x9x3mm ball bearings for the front. Get the ones from Yeah Racing, you get a pack of 10 for half the price of 4 Tamiya ones.

A great update to a tamiya icon. Surprisingly different to built from the original. Handles extremely well.

If you like to build RC kits then this is for you. Great Tamiya quality that includes bearings and oil filled shocks. Just a fun RC to build and to play around with.

What reviewers say

Reviewers consistently rate the Tamiya Lunch Box EVO 1/12 Electric 2WD Monster Truck Kit (CW-01) highly, describing it as enjoyable to build and drive, with good handling and Tamiya quality. Praised features include included bearings and oil-filled shocks. One detailed review reports that the shocks can leak, recommending sealant during assembly, and that the included steering setup was the weakest point. That reviewer replaced the kit servo saver and servo horn, and recommended a metal gear servo, aftermarket parts, and checking turnbuckle length. Only three reviews are available, all verified and all five stars, so the sample is small.
