About this part

Tamiya Volkswagen Golf MK2 GTI Electric 1/10 4WD Rally Car

The 1980s witnessed the rise of the hot hatch in the automotive world. Among the automakers that played a pivotal role in popularizing hatchbacks was Volkswagen, with its iconic MK2 GTI 16V earning a special place in the hearts of automotive enthusiasts. Tamiya has meticulously reproduced the MK2 GTI, transforming it into a rally race car built for A7 class competition. This body is mounted on the versatile MF-01 chassis, perfectly suited for navigating both asphalt and flat dirt terrains with ease.

MF-01X Chassis:

Based around a tough monocoque frame with integrated gearboxes, this compact 4WD chassis gives a thrilling drive whether you take it on road or flat dirt surfaces. It features a rear-mounted motor, with gear-driven rear wheels and a propeller shaft taking power to the front. Both front and rear gearboxes have differential gears. The battery pack location in the chassis center secures excellent balance, while 4-wheel independent double wishbone suspension employs friction dampers.

Quite literally the worst experience I have ever buying a kit... first off, kit was previously opened, most of the plastics were already off the trees.. someone must have took what they needed and must have returned this mess... the box had a label "opened and inspected" I should have returned it then.. I started building the kit, found missing parts that are not easy to find. Ordered replacement parts from japan and china, as there was no response from my cs request to Amain. Sat down to continue the build, next step.. guess what.. more missing parts...

This kit was a straightforward build with a nicely detailed body. I'd suggest picking up some bearings for the initial build as opposed to the included bushings, as it would require a full tear down to upgrade to them after it's already built. Fun little kit to drive around pavement and hard packed dirt alike, the included rally tires do a good job on both surfaces. Light buckets are functional and take 5mm LEDs, you could also go all out and add 3mm turn signals and reverse lights from the looks of the rear light buckets.

I got this kit to add to my Tamiya collection-and it is authentic because VW did actually make an AWD Golf Mk2 for rallying. It goes together pretty quickly without any real issues-I had it running in about 3 1/2 hours. I also added CVA oil shocks and bearings-and the Torque Tuned motor supplied is adequate for small, tight rally courses-anything bigger, like an indoor club-type track, may require something a bit hotter (whatever the local rules allow, of course). I always use a 3000 Mah Nimh battery-so a Lipo will likely be a performance upgrade as well. Overall a nice addition to my rally car fleet.

Absolutely, immediately one of my favorite tamiya chassis. Fun to build with easy clear instructions. It is a well balanced 4wd vehicle that can be run in road of flat off road. This kid handles well ( I do have oil shocks) and rips. Highly recommend it / I will add that if you want to make it box Art, please take your time as there is a lot of decals

I got this kit 4 months ago, built it ran it love it! I've built one before this one but that one has the Yeah racing long arm kit in it. This one I built it with the idea of giving it a go on a budget(cheap). I got to say it handles just as good(surprised me). The one thing I recommend is tire foam. Now you can buy tire foam(good option) or cut your own(10mm thick shipping foam works great). CVA mini shocks(get the ones with out the springs use the kit supplied ones). M chassis has been around a long time, since 1996. Lots of bodies to choose from all are great. This chassis is very capable, just check out Poor boys RC channel on YouTube, they did a speed challenge with this chassis, it's wild. Anyway awesome build, highly detailed body great running car only thing it needs is owners! That's where you come in! Build it drive it and love it!

What reviewers say

Reviewers largely praise the kit's build experience, detailed body and handling on pavement and hard-packed dirt, with several describing it as a favourite Tamiya chassis. Multiple owners recommend replacing the included bushings with bearings, and suggest upgrades such as oil shocks, foam tyre inserts and a LiPo battery. One reviewer reports a single unsatisfactory purchase: a previously opened box with missing parts and unresponsive seller support, with replacements sourced elsewhere. The other reviews do not mention missing parts, so this appears to be an isolated experience. Reviewers note the motor is adequate for small rally courses but may be underpowered for larger tracks.

  • + Straightforward, quick build
  • + Detailed body and clear instructions
  • + Handles well on pavement and dirt
  • + Good stock rally tyres
  • − Included bushings should be replaced with bearings
  • − Missing parts in one reported kit
  • − Stock motor adequate only for small courses
  • − Many decals on body
