Excellent kit! Amazing fit and finish and the use of plastic technology is evident throughout! The drivetrain is so smooth it’s almost silent when running; amazing! Yes it costs a bit more, but it’s totally worth it. Mine is stock but handles and drifts beautifully. Buy one and get ready for, (seriously), a really enjoyable building experience and exceptional performance. Highly recommended.
When I opened the content I felt like the design was off, the arms are way short and the chassis is narrow. However, I was wrong. The design on this XV-02 Pro is a true rally chassis. No other company can offer you a specific genre vehicle like Tamiya. The plastic parts on this car is high resolution in detail, fit and finish is jet-fighter quality, well maybe Dyson vacuum quality and that's a compliment. The weight layout of the vehicle in particular to the motor and battery is a significant role on how this vehicle's handling of weight transfer really makes it a top performer. The TRF shocks are also a major contributor as it dictates suspension travel and weight transfer. I will be adding a few hop-up such as the aluminum hinge blocks and the center limited slip-differential to save the drive train when the car hits some pavement so I would wish Amain to carry some of those hop-ups from Tamiya. I have compared this vehicle to an old HPI RS4 belt-drive rally (from back in the days) and Traxxas 1/14th Rally (MERV-mini E-Revo Chassis) and this kit is the one to get, other then the previous version XV-01 which is an upgrade from the TA03F. Now if I can get some locals to come out and play besides their crawlers and scalers, that would be make this Sumo.....a flying.
I can only guess the hardware isn't very hard. I used my own hex tool to put the differential cases together and managed to strip the heads on all the fasteners (they get very, very tight and the miniscule allen wrench provided in the kit wasn't working). Unless I spend another $50 on two more diffs to try again I now have a very expensive static model LOL.
Awesome kit; this handles like a dream. I paired it with every cheap piece of stuff I had (budget servo, budget brushless motor/Hobbywing combo), and this machine still handles like it is on rails. It's worth the time to build, and the kit includes very good instructions.
This is a great kit for many different driving conditions and the parts are top shelf. The dust covers are an excellent feature that weighs less than previous Tamiya rally cars, and protects expensive parts. Handling is exceptional in the dirt, and on pavement if you change the tires. The hex hardware is excellent , and if you use hex bits that are in good condition you won’t damage the hardware. The slipper clutch is an expensive addition, but necessary if you want to use a powerful brushless motor. There are a number of optional ring gears to adjust the gear ratios for your differentials.
Reviewers broadly praise the Tamiya XV-02 Pro rally chassis for its handling, smooth drivetrain, and build quality, with several noting it performs well even with budget electronics. Praise includes the dust covers, the slipper clutch, and optional ring gears for gearing adjustments. One reviewer found the kit's hex hardware easy to strip with the included tools and reported unable to complete the differentials without buying replacements, while another said hex hardware is excellent if good-quality bits are used. Opinions on price vary, with some calling it expensive but worth it. Overall sentiment is strongly positive, though the sample is small.
