The kit is just OK, but for the money it is not! The 2 differentials with the pulleys for the belt drive are all plastic, the gears in the diffs are also all plastic. The instruction manual is not for the first time builder. For the price of $400 plus a retro Kyosho or Tamiya would be a much wiser choice.
Not bad but not great. Kit went together well but the chassis material is cheap and the white plastic is not forgiving at all. Don’t over tighten the diff caps or the center gear cover it will just crumble into plastic shrapnel. These parts should have been nylon like what’s used in other AE kits. Kinda gave up on this one. Not worth spending money for upgrades would basically need to replace 90% of the parts to actually race it. Will look good on the shelf for now. Very disappointed was hoping for better quality for the price.
If you want an exact replica of the original YZ-10, this is not it. The original had ball diffs front and rear as well as one way hubs in the front. This version has gear diffs. Parts between this and the original are not compatible especially bulkhead holes front and rear. Be aware of this. However, if you want something that pretty much looks the same as the original and has the same vibe, then this is the kit for you. This version can handle today's power sources and motors, and even comes with a steering servo mount(in the old days, we were instructed to use servo tape to tape the steering servo directly to the chassis). I love this car regardless and painted it up to be like the ad car from the late 80s. Here's my overview on it: https://youtu.be/kR3qcetPe_g?si=FLlDBNxD86SJawax
Reviewers agree the kit builds well and that it looks and feels like the original YZ-10 classic buggy, though it is not an exact replica: this version uses gear differentials instead of the original ball diffs and one-way front hubs, so parts are not interchangeable with the original, particularly bulkhead holes. Reviewers disagree on value. Two rate it 2/5, citing all-plastic diffs and gears, plastic chassis material, and a value concern at about $400, with one suggesting a retro Kyosho or Tamiya instead. One rates it 4/5 for its modern power compatibility and included steering servo mount. A recurring problem is brittle white plastic, where over-tightened diff caps or center gear covers can crack. Instructions are described as not beginner-friendly. Reviewers also note that upgrades would be extensive for racing.
