Traxxas XL-5HV 3S Waterproof Electronic Speed Control
About this part
This is the Traxxas XL-5HV 3S Waterproof Electronic Speed Control. HV stands for compatibility with the high voltage 3S LiPo battery packs for greater efficiency and power. In addition to the three standard profiles (Sport, Race and Training Mode), the XL-5 HV features a Trail profile that serves up a little bit of drag brake for smooth intuitive driving for most of your adventures. A new Crawl profile introduces hill hold and instant reverse for extremely technical courses. Either will help you navigate the trail with ease.

"BUYER BEWARE" 30 day warranty on all electronics, this could be you. trx4 i bought last year with little to no use, pretty much a shelf queen. esc started on fire in my living room. they know they have a problem with them but who cares as long as they last 30 days.
Followed the guide step by step and the esc doesn't do what its supposed to do the led lights don't flash the way the how to book says they will. Unhappy with thus trx4 since i bought it
I picked one if these up used from my LHS for use in my Tamiya CR-01. I run it on 2s with a Tekin 16t 5-slot motor. Servo power is handled by a little Castle 4a BEC, so the ESC is only used to power the receiver and motor. I've been extremely happy with this ESC. It stays nice and cool with this 5 slot motor, even after a good hour+ of crawling with a 4000mAh pack. No fires, no drama, just does exactly what it says in the tin. Not sure what other's setups are. Maybe running flat out on 3s with the Traxxas 12t 550 motor and no fan? I can only guess the shelf queen guy left the ESC plugged in to the battery and powered on when putting it on said shelf. Leaving shelf queens plugged in is not only useless but dangerous with lithium packs. I can't guarantee that you won't spontaneously catch on fire, but I can say that this ESC hasn't set me on fire yet. Do with that what you will.
Burnt out after 15mins of use. If your ESC burns out on your Traxxas order anything other than Traxxas as a replacement. I am livid that I spent $70 on an ESC just for it to die almost immediately.
Reviews of this Traxxas XL-5HV 3S waterproof ESC are sharply divided. Three of four reviews rate it 1/5, and all three describe the unit failing: one reports it burning out after about 15 minutes, another reports it catching fire, and a third says it was shelved with little use before failing. One of these also says the 30-day warranty is short for electronics. A further 1/5 review says the LED indicators did not flash as the guide describes. The single 5/5 review, from an owner running it on 2S with a 5-slot motor and a separate BEC, reports that it stayed cool and performed as described. That reviewer suggests the failures may relate to higher-power setups or to storage with the ESC powered on, but the reviews do not establish a cause. The sample is small and the experiences conflict.
- + Stayed cool in a 2S crawler setup with a 5-slot motor
- + Performed as described for one owner over an hour of use
- − Reports of burnout or failure within minutes
- − One reported fire
- − LED indicators did not match the guide
- − Short 30-day warranty concern
